Arch C. Klumph Society

The Rotary Foundation provides special recognition to Rotarians and friends of Rotary who contribute $250,000 or more to The Rotary Foundation by inducting them into the Arch C. Klumph Society. Members may have their portraits displayed in the Arch C. Klumph Gallery at Rotary International’s World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, USA. Donors receive a certificate signed by the President of Rotary International and the Chairman of The Rotary Foundation, and they are invited to a special event at annual RI conventions. The society is named in honour of The Rotary Foundation’s founder, Arch C. Klumph.

Arch C. Klumph Society members photographs and statement of support for The Rotary Foundation are recorded on a touch screen kiosk at Rotary International World Headquarters. The touch screen kiosk is portable and on display at major Rotary events such as the International Convention and International Assembly.

Arch C. Klumph Society Members are among The Rotary Foundation’s top leaders and innovators. Members believe in the work of The Rotary Foundation and have made supporting peace, education, and humanitarian assistance part of their personal mission. They are key supporters of the Foundation, and their involvement is vital to its work.

Arch C. Klumph Society members support The Rotary Foundation for a variety of reasons. With their help, the Foundation is fulfilling Rotary’s promise of creating a polio-free world. Children and families are living healthier lives through the Foundation’s Humanitarian Grants Program. Educational and cultural exchange programs are helping young people build lasting friendships and mutual understanding with their peers around the world. Member support enables tomorrow’s leaders to live and study together as Rotary World Peace Fellows and provides them the opportunity to begin building a more peaceful world.

We honour the following Canadian members of the
Arch C. Klumph Society

Jane grew up in Ottawa, moved west and attended university in Vancouver and Saskatoon where she completed an MSc in Bacteriology.  When Sandy’s medical practice opened in Medicine Hat.  She became Business Manager/Accountant.  She has also developed a love for ceramic arts and is a busy “hobby” potter and has been a major organizer for the educational component of Medalta, a local pottery turned into a working museum and tourist destination.

Sandy has practiced Medicine as an Ophthalmologist in Medicine Hat from 1969 to 2005 when he retired.  He joined Rotary in 1977, was its President in 1983 and became District Governor of District 5360 in 2002-03.  He was very involved in a 3-H Project “Integrated Village Development” in India. This gave 53,000 people Clean Drinking water, Sanitation facilities, Medical Clinics, a Road linking the villages to a highway and rail station and 11,000 fruit trees.  He served on the 2010 Council on Legislation.  He is the Chairman of the Donald MacRae Peace Award Committee for Zones 24 and 32.

Jane and Sandy are delighted to be able to contribute their money to Polio Plus and to an Endowed Fund for support of the Rotary Peace Centers.

Penny is from Manitoba and has lived in Ontario, New Brunswick, Alberta and BC. Her professional background is as a social worker and in health care administration.  She worked managing brain injury and spinal cord rehabilitation programs.  Penny is a graduate of the University of Manitoba and Carleton University. She served as governor of District 5040 in 2010-2011.

Chris is from BC. He was a police officer for 31 years. His early career was with the RCMP and for 27 years with the Vancouver Police Department in a variety of senior command positions. Chris is a graduate of Simon Fraser University, University of Victoria and Carleton University. He was District Governor in 1999-2000 and has served on a variety of Rotary International, Rotary Foundation and Zone committees and in regional coordinator positions.

Penny and Chris are both Rotary Foundation alumni. Chris has served as a GSE team member and team leader. Chris and Penny were Rotary Foundation volunteers in the Philippines delivering humanitarian aid. They have also traveled to China as non medical volunteers on a Rotaplast mission. Most recently Chris represented Rotary as a member of a polio surveillance team in South Sudan.

Penny and Chris feel strongly that Rotary can contribute significantly to world peace and understanding and have established an endowment fund to support the Rotary Peace Centers and Rotary peace initiatives.

Ken Hobbs was born in Ottawa, in 1928 and was the co-founder of the Whitby Medical Centre in Ontario, Canada. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Medicine degrees from the University of Western Ontario.

Ken joined the Rotary Club of Whitby, Ontario, in 1976 and served as club president. He was also a member of the Canadian Medical Association, Ontario Medical Association and served as chair of the board (1972-75) and chief of staff (1975-77) at Doctor J.O. Ruddy Hospital in Ontario. Within his community, Ken served as chair of the Whitby Public School Board and the Whitby Town Council.

Ken and his wife, Eva, supported The Rotary Foundation’s Annual Programs Fund, Matching Grants, Permanent Fund, and PolioPlus. Ken served as Governor of District 7070 in 1985-1986. He then devoted himself to projects in and around Madras, Indian. Assisting the people of India with the support of Rotary Foundation grants.

James and Linda Bradley

James was born in Methlick, Scotland, and moved with his family to Canada when he was 14. He studied mechanical engineering and business administration in college. Linda was born in Montreal. She graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse.  Linda began her career at Montreal’s Royal Victoria Hospital in 1968, the same year she and James married.

A year after the Bradleys moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1974, James launched his own aircraft design engineering firm, DART Aerospace. In 1984, Linda finished her nursing career at Children’s Hospital in Vancouver and then joined DART Aerospace as vice president of marketing.

Linda and James became Rotarians in 1996. James joined the Rotary Club of Sidney, British Columbia, while Linda joined the Rotary Club of Sidney by the Sea. They moved to Ontario in 1998 and joined the Rotary Club of Hawkesbury. A move to Ottawa in 2007 took them to the Rotary Club of Ottawa.

After selling their business in 2003, the Bradleys began devoting significant time to Rotary. They traveled to South and Central America on Rotary project work. They have travelled to African countries on Rotary project work and to participate in a National Immunization Day. Most recently, both have served as District 7040 leaders: Linda as district governor in 2006-07 and as the Chair of the Host Organising Committee for the Montreal-2010 Rotary International Convention.

Linda has recently been appointed to the Rotary Peace Centers Major Gifts Initiative committee. They have three children and two grandchildren.

Everett and Ellen Mayhood (deceased)

The late Ev Mayhood was born in 1914 in Calgary, Alberta. After high school, he took a job with Safeway, working his way up to office manager and controller. He met Ellen, and they married in 1940. After 17 years with Safeway, Ev purchased a company that was going bankrupt and built it into the largest supplier of frozen food in the Canadian northwest. He expanded into other businesses, including frozen food storage, real estate, and wineries.

Ev became a Rotarian in 1963 as a member of the Rotary Club of Calgary. He initiated the club’s highly successful annual Bow Valley barbecue fundraiser and ran the event until age 86. Over the years, Ev and Ellen spent their winters in Hawaii, which allowed Ev to log significant time doing make-ups at the Rotary Club of Honolulu, Oahu.

Ev’s financial support played a crucial role in the development and success of the Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre. He was an active member of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce.

He continued to practice family medicine which included anesthesiology, delivering babies and running a very busy office practice. Bob was also a medical director of a home for the aged and a Coroner for the Province of Ontario. He retired from active practice in 1993.

Bob joined the Rotary Club of Cobourg in 1971. He served as club president in 1978-79 and as governor of District 7070 in 1987-88. He was a member of the RI Board of Directors from 1996-98, serving as RI vice president in 1997-98.  Bob’s 2004-08 years as a member of The Rotary Foundation Trustees board culminated as chairman in 2007-08.

Bob and Ann are devoted supporters of Rotary’s work to eradicate polio, participating in many National Immunization Days in Egypt, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Pakistan. Bob served as co-director of the polio eradication fundraising campaign in 2002-03. He has been a member of the International PolioPlus Committee for several years and has chaired the committee since 2006-07.

Ann is an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Cobourg. In addition to their four children, Bob and Ann have eight grandchildren, four boys and four girls.

The late Frank Branscombe was born in St. Catherines, Ontario, in 1918. He left school before finishing eighth grade and went to work delivering bread and sold meat. He held a position in insurance sales before founding a land-development company, River Realty of Niagara Falls. He retired from the business in 1997.

A Rotarian since 1959, Frank was a member of the Rotary Club of Niagara Falls. In addition to their generous support of The Rotary Foundation, Frank and Mildred extended their philanthropy to enrich their own community through significant gifts to a large number of institutions, with an emphasis on health and education. They established their own vehicle for giving, the Branscombe Family Foundation, which provides support to various causes, including paying tuition for underprivileged students. Frank also was instrumental in starting the Niagara Community Foundation. Since 1977, the Branscombes have given more than US$15 million in charitable donations. In 2001, the Niagara University College of Business Administration presented Frank with its inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award for his many years of service to the community as a developer and philanthropist.

Frank and Mildred are members of The Rotary Foundation’s Bequest Society. They have five children and six grandchildren.

David and Lis Ker

Dave Ker was born in Victoria, British Columbia, and studied economics at the University of British Columbia before earning an MBA at the University of Western Ontario in 1950. He began his career as a public clerk, then worked as an accounting executive for CP Airlines from 1956 to 1975. From 1975 to 1980 with a partner he formed and operated Balker Softwoods, an export lumber firm. From 1976 to 1987, Dave worked as a public accounting practitioner. He is now retired.

Dave became a Rotarian in 1977 as a member of the Rotary Club of Vancouver South. He served as club president in 1987-88 and as governor of District 5040 in 1996-97. Dave has been an enthusiastic supporter of efforts to extend Rotary in Siberia and eastern Russia. He served as a special representative from District 5040 to help charter clubs in Novosibirsk in 1995 and Barnaul in 1997.

David and Liz established an endowment fund with The Rotary Foundation for Russian students to attend the BC Institute of Technology.

Lis, who is Danish, served from 1996 to 2001 as chair of a District 5040 program that hosted Russian Rotarians and their spouses who traveled to Canada to learn about Rotary in the West. The Kers have endowed an Ambassadorial Scholarship for students from Siberia to study business in the British Columbia.

Dave and Lis have two sons.

Ralph Ivan and Carole Jones

Ralph was born in Chatham, ON but earned his Mechanical Engineering degree from The University of Toronto, in 1958. While in Toronto, Ralph met Carole who graduated from Toronto Teachers' College in 1959. On April 16th of the following year, Ralph and Carole married.

Afterwards, Ralph pursued a successful engineering career in the Natural Gas Industry in Canada and the USA with consulting work in Europe, Africa, South America, Asia and Australia. He has served as vice-president of regulatory and government affairs for Direct Energy Marketing, Ltd., as past chairman of the operating section of the American Gas Association, a past vice-chairman of pipeline codes for the Canadian Standards Association, and a former Canadian representative for the International Gas Union. Ralph has served as secretary-treasurer of the local Sons of the American Revolution, and is currently the Director & V.P. of the Baptist Convention of Ontario & Quebec Foundation.

Carol has worked as a Special Education Teacher and as a Department Manager in a Specialty Retail Store. She is an active member of the Rotary Club of Allistion, Ontario since 1999.

Ralph joined the Rotary Club of North Scarborough in January of 1973. He served as Club President 1989-90 and Governor of District 7070 in 1996-97. Ralph also served as Annual Programs Fund Strategic Advisor in 2001-02 and continues to serve as a New Models Pilot Project Country representative.

Ralph and Carole have two children, Doug and Louise, and four grandchildren, Emily(9), Austin(7), Victoria(4) and the most recent addition to the family, 4 month old Abby. In addition to being proud grandparents, and dedicated Rotarians, curling and bridge are favorite hobbies.

Both Ralph and Carole believe The Rotary Foundation to be the premier vehicle for bringing hope for a better life to people in need around the world. When Ralph joined Rotary, 30 years ago, he considered it an honor and privilege to be invited. With that honor came the opportunity - to be more effective in service to others - and the vehicle (TRF) - for delivering assistance to those in need in distant countries.

"As Rotarians", Ralph and Carole say, "we are inspired to strive for World Peace; a goal that won't be realized without sharing what we have with those in need and helping them to be healthy, literate, self-respecting individuals".

Charles (deceased) and Carol Loh

Charles Loh was born in Shanghai, China, and lived in Taiwan and Hong Kong before moving to Vancouver. In 1974, he founded Lohs Enterprises, a holding company, and began investing in real estate in 1992.

Charles became a Rotarian in 1960 as a member of the Rotary Club of Taipei North, Taiwan. He also belonged to the Rotary clubs of Hong Kong, Vancouver South, and Vancouver before becoming charter president of the Rotary Club of Vancouver Chinatown in 1981-82. He was governor of District 5040 in 1992-93 and has also served at the district level as chair of the Rotary Fellowship Committee. He served as RI presidential representative in Indonesia.

The Lohs are avid supporters of the educational programs of The Rotary Foundation. They have given generously to support Ambassadorial Scholarships, including three endowed scholarships. They also support Langara College and the University of British Columbia, the alma mater of all three of their sons.

Charles is a member of the board of directors of the BC Rehab Foundation, which assists people with disabilities. Carol paints Chinese watercolors, which she donates to Rotary fundraising events.
